There are engines. Several of them. You’ve a choice of a small turbo petrol (128bhp 1.2-litre Puretech) and a turbo diesel (128bhp 1.5-litre BlueHDi), using a six-speed manual gearbox as

My current car is a 308 hdi t9 with 97k miles, I’d say that car is proving to be more reliable wrt dpf, no issues at all. Now for the 1.2 puretech - family member has 308 1.2 puretech allure. Bought with around 17k miles.
The bulk of the engine range is similar to the 2008’s smaller 208 sibling. It kicks off with a 100hp 1.2-litre PureTech engine, which is paired to a six-speed manual gearbox only. In reality it’s all you really need. The 100hp engine is quiet unless really stretched, and the presence of a sixth gear means it’s relaxed at higher speeds.
Turbocharger used on the 1.2 Puretech engine is a very simple fixed vane unit & bombproof, IIRC its rated to spin up to 240k RPM. reliability, modifications
Citroen C3 - 1.2 puretech turbo engine misfire (2017,49k miles) - medview : The Puretech engine is very reliable providing you remember the following. Its direct fuel injection so it will coke up the back of the inlet valves if always lightly driven at low rpm, this also causes oil consumption past the valve stem oil seals - they hate trundling
We'd recommend a Honda Civic Estate. It's very practical and your budget will get a 2016 model with a reliable 1.8-litre petrol engine and automatic gearbox. Also consider a Peugeot 308 SW (estate) with the 1.2-litre PureTech petrol engine or Vauxhall Astra Estate with the 1.4-litre turbo.
Although the 1.2-litre three-cylinder Puretech engine can be found under the bonnet of all manner of PSA Group products, the rest of the car is a significant departure from the outgoing 3008
The 1.2 Puretech has cast iron cylinder liners in an aluminium alloy block, which is far superior to VW engines (& most other marques) which are alusil and use much more oil than you're getting. Mine didn't need any top ups between 16,000 mile services until it reached 60,000 miles (now over 80,000). My son has the car now and its still going
